MOHSIN SCHOOL HEALTH EYE CARE PROJECT – Project 2

    Eye Care in children:

Having strived for 23 years to treat Corneal Blindness, the Trustees after much contemplation decided that VEBART Trust must initiate some programme to address the root cause to Prevent Blindness. Thus "School Health Eye Care Project" was conceived as a project.

It is very disherting to know that several children are either visually handicapped and /or are blinded due to refractive errors. India has 407 million children below 16 years of age ( 40% of population). Globally about 19 million children under age of 15 are visually handicapped while in India 1.4 million are visually blind, of which about 60-70 % have either preventable or treatable blindness.

Thus,“Mohsin School Health Eye Care Project” (managed by VEBART Trust) came into existence in 2017. Mohsin Brothers Foundation contributed Rs. 15,00,000/- (Rupees Fifteen Lakhs only) in memory of late Sri Kasim S. Mehdi, as intial funding for this project.

For effective implementation VEBART Trust sought the cooperation of Visakha Eye Hospital by entering into an MOU with Visakha Eye Hospital Trust.

Visakha Eye Hospital is one of the leading hospital in Andhra Pradesh having state of the art facility and highly experienced and dedicated team of Doctors and Optometrists to provide quality care through best practices and procedures.

"Mohsin School Health Eye Care Project" currently function with  two independent teams - vehicles, equipment and technical staff who visit Govt. & Govt. aided schools in the Districts of Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram & Anakapalli. The school screening camps are conducted with prior intimation to the Head Masters of respective schools and District Education Officer, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh.

After screening, spectacles to correct Refractive errors & treatment for other ailments / defects is provided to the needy children. Those children diagnosed with Ophthalmological disorder needing further treatment and / or surgery are referred to the base hospital i.e. Visakha Eye Hospital - All of this Free of Cost.

By diagnosing and treating at a young age, we believe would go a long way in preventing blindness and thereby improving the quality of life as a child and in adulthood.

    Year 2023 Since Inception
No. of School Screening Camps  154 946
No. of Children Screened 41,099 2,00,105
No. of Free Surgeries 3 25
No. of Distribution Spectacles  1220 4,587

As this is a daunting task which requires huge resources in terms of finance and manpower, we seek the continued support and co-operation of the local NGO’s, Corporates, Social Organisations and Public at large. The response has been very encouraging and this motivates us to strive harder for the cause.
